Who is this plan for?

Complete beginners

Never run before, or haven't run in years. The plan starts gently and builds from your very first session.

Returning runners

Coming back after injury, pregnancy, or a long break. The progressive structure rebuilds fitness safely.

First-time runDisney runners

Signing up for the Princess 5K as your first runDisney event and want a structured plan to prepare properly.

Those wanting a foundation

Planning to move up to the 10K or Half Marathon eventually — the 5K plan builds the base for longer distances.

How the plan is structured

A typical week has three sessions: a drill run mid-week, an easy run or Magic Mile, and a long run at the weekend.

Weeks 1–3

Building the habit

Short run-walk sessions to introduce consistent training. Three sessions per week with easy effort throughout.

Weeks 4–6

First Magic Mile

Your first timed one-mile benchmark. Sessions get slightly longer as the running intervals build in duration.

Weeks 7–10

Building distance

Progressive longer runs on Saturdays. Midweek sessions add cadence drills and hill efforts to build strength and form.

Weeks 11–12

Peak weeks

Your longest training runs of the plan. Sessions feel challenging but manageable — you're prepared for them by the work you've already put in.

Week 13

Race week

A short taper with reduced volume to keep your legs fresh. Race day lands at the end of this week.

Common questions

Do I need running experience to do the Princess 5K training plan?
No. The plan is designed for complete beginners with no running background. The first weeks start with gentle run-walk sessions and build progressively to race distance.
How long is the Princess 5K training plan?
13 weeks, with 39 structured sessions across three training days per week. Race week is included with a taper to keep your legs fresh.
Can I walk during the Princess 5K?
Yes. The runDisney 5K has a generous time limit and the run-walk-run approach is used by the majority of participants. Walking on a schedule is a training method, not giving up.
